Elk River board approves community facilities task force, sets timeline for recommendations

The Elk River School District Board on March 10 unanimously approved creation of a 2025 Community Facilities Task Force to study long-term facility needs and produce up to three actionable recommendations for the board.
The facilities committee presented a scope, membership-selection plan and timeline that calls for recruitment in March–May 2025, membership selection over the summer, a series of meetings September–November 2025, and board consideration of the task force's recommendations in December 2025–January 2026. The board discussed the committee's plan for ensuring broad geographic and demographic representation across the district.
Director Steinbrecher described the timeline and purpose: the task force will "identify the needs" and provide no more than three recommendations addressing school building capacity planning, boundary considerations, grade configurations and financially responsible options intended to last five to 10 years. The facilities committee emphasized that task-force recommendations must be financially responsible and avoid short-term fixes that fail within a few years.
Board members asked that the facilities committee recommend short-term mitigation steps for schools already operating above capacity while the longer study proceeds. Chair Anderson asked the administration to prepare short-term options (for example, staffing or temporary classroom adjustments) so the board can act quickly if needed; Superintendent Elmos said administration would prepare those proposals.
Under the approved plan, up to three board members may observe task-force meetings but not participate, and the task force will operate as an advisory body to the board. The board will review membership recommendations from the facilities committee and then vote to appoint the task force. The committee and administration noted that task-force meetings will be public postings but the task-force sessions themselves will not be an open public forum; the board emphasized transparency through regular updates to the full board and public.
