Board names Heath Middle School shop the Don Reid Industrial Arts Center

The Greeley Evans School District 6 Board of Education voted unanimously to name the renovated shop at Heath Middle School the Don Reid Industrial Arts Center.
The naming followed a review process required by district policy, during which the committee received 81 nominations and found substantial community support for Don Reid. "His commitment, dedication, and passion have inspired many to make a living in the trades," a committee summary read. Nicole Peterson, principal of Brentwood Middle School, and Dr. Dawn Krieger of Heath presented the committee's recommendation to the board.
The board followed policy procedures for facility names and heard testimonials from former students and colleagues who described Reid as a mentor with a "creative energy" that encouraged students to pursue trades and lifelong learning. Dr. Krieger said submissions cited Reid's patience, kindness and long service to middle school students.
Don Reid, who taught industrial arts for decades, addressed the board. "The school board is responsible for all of this because you make it so kids could come to school," he said, accepting the recognition and thanking the board.
The motion to approve the recommendation passed 6-0. Voting recorded: Director Azari — Aye; Director Bentley — Aye; Director Campos Spitzy — Aye; Director Masch — Aye; Director Matthews — Aye; Director Sullivan — Aye. The board scheduled no further conditions.
The district said the naming recognizes Reid's contribution to the Heath program and its students and will be reflected on signage in the renovated shop.
