Board hears summer project recommendations: media-center tech, Stevenson tennis resurfacing and district paving bids

District facilities staff and consultants presented three sets of summer project recommendations Monday to the Livonia Public Schools Board of Education: technology and cabling work in media centers using 2021 bond funds, a resurfacing of Stevenson High School tennis courts to address rust spotting, and multiple paving projects across district properties.

Phil, a district facilities presenter, summarized the 2025 media center technology work (bond-funded), noting the scope includes Ethernet and cabling work, short-throw projectors or screens, and other audio-visual equipment for remodeled library/media centers and some kitchen Ethernet upgrades tied to meal-card systems. The administration reported Moss Telecommunications as the low responsible bidder after scope review; the item was scheduled to be brought to the regular meeting for contract award.

On Stevenson High School’s tennis courts, consultant Colin Frank and facilities staff described rust spotting that has appeared on the court surface. Colin explained the cause as metallic particles within certain fill materials that, when exposed to water and sun over time, can cause rust spots that are primarily aesthetic and do not generally affect playability. The district noted alternatives—using clean fill or concrete—would materially increase costs; the team had included alternates in the original bid. After post-bid interviews the team recommended Laser Sports Servicing to perform surface remediation and recoating; the hard construction recommendation was $87,900 with a construction recommendation of $96,690, and the work was described as within the expected budget.

Facilities staff also presented results of a public bid for a three-location paving package—Central Office Phase 2, a partial student parking lot at Franklin High School, and a two-inch mill-and-cap at Bentley Field for track striping. Best Asphalt Inc. was recommended as the lowest responsible bidder. The total hard-construction recommendation for the paving package was $1,318,872 with a 10% contingency recommendation of $131,887 for a $1,450,759 total project award recommendation; the package included alternates for Franklin High School ($258,494) and Bentley Field track repaving ($94,859).

Board members asked about the durability of different tennis-court build methods and whether families and coaches had been notified. Facilities staff said Stevenson coaches and administrators had been informed and that the district would follow up with Franklin. No formal contract awards were completed at the Committee of the Whole; the vendor recommendations will be presented for board action at the regular meeting.
