Fairfield Union treasurer seeks $200,000 transfer to food service as district implements universal free meals

Fairfield Union Local Treasurer Mrs. Roberts asked the board to approve a $200,000 transfer from the general fund to the food service fund to cover upfront costs after the district began offering free meals to all students under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).
Roberts told the board the district projects the food service program could require about $300,000 per year in transfers but requested $200,000 at this time. She said increased state funding has offset part of the cost, and that the district will monitor claims and revenue as the year continues.
“She has projected that we will need to transfer about $300,000 a year. So I'm bringing to the board right now, asking for it to transfer $200,000,” Roberts said during the financial report. The board approved the recommended transfer by unanimous vote.
Roberts also reviewed the district’s February financial summary, noting timing differences in property‑tax advances that made comparisons to last year appear lower for the month but expected tax receipts to normalize in March. She reported health insurance claims were up from the prior year but said reserves and premiums are being managed to limit exposure.
The board accepted an anonymous $1,000 donation to the academic excellence scholarship and approved routine financial and insurance summaries for the month.
