PKMS highlights student gains as district readies new administration building and gym HVAC work

Poteau Kindergarten‑Middle School (PKMS) leaders presented school identity, climate and academic progress to the board, and district facilities staff updated the board on several capital projects including a new administration building and plans to design HVAC work for the PKMS main gym.
Dr. Gillum, PKMS presenter, told the board PKMS has 295 fifth‑ and sixth‑grade students and 38 faculty and staff, and described student demographics: 84% economically disadvantaged, 16% English‑language learners, 31% in a talented program, 27% served by IEP or 504 plans and 32% tribal students with CVIB cards. Gillum said the school has improved attendance and increased library circulation and noted academic strengths and areas for growth in reading, writing and math.
"Our vision at PKMS is for all students to feel that they belong and that they can succeed," Dr. Gillum said, highlighting social‑emotional learning, project‑based learning training and schoolwide character and attendance incentives.
Facilities director Miss Cochran told the board the district had received a certificate of occupancy for the new administration building at 3003 North Broadway and planned a move during spring break, with the board room to be in the new location starting in April. Cochran said the district is contracting mechanical engineering work to design HVAC upgrades for the PKMS main gym and anticipated soliciting bids once design work is complete.
She also reported OG&E had set a new transformer at the bus barn to support charging infrastructure for two additional electric buses expected later in the year and that two full‑size activity buses were expected to arrive in April. Cochran said the district planned to move most administrative functions on the Friday of spring break to minimize disruption.
Board members thanked PKMS staff for improvements including new epoxy floors, roof work and classroom upgrades and discussed timelines for gym HVAC design and installation.
