Police chief reports quarterly activity, shelter updates and equipment upgrades

The Lincoln Park police chief delivered the department's quarterly activity report and updated the council on operations, staffing and the animal shelter.
The chief said patrol responded to 9,088 calls for service during the quarter, handled 253 crash reports with 53 injuries, and documented 428 arrests. The department issued 2,798 violations and an additional 4,500 violations under selective enforcement. Detectives investigated 434 complaints and closed 358. School resource officers handled 205 complaints, while special operations investigated 84 complaints.
The chief reported the department received body-worn cameras and new in-car cameras during the quarter. Staffing notes included one reserve officer in training (scheduled to graduate in May) and a recruit in the police academy scheduled to graduate May 8; the department reported being three officers short following a resignation and a retirement. A sergeant promotion test was scheduled to fill an open sergeant position.
On animal-shelter activity, the chief said the shelter took in 41 dogs and 14 cats during the quarter and currently had 14 dogs and three cats in the facility. Shelter staff secured a $5,000 grant to support spay and neuter services running from February through September, the chief said.
The chief highlighted community policing activities — reading programs, Shop with a Cop, blood drives and fundraising events — and said community engagement remains a department priority. Council members thanked shelter staff and praised community outreach programs.
