Historical Society asks commission to help bring Juneteenth speaker to Carson City

The speaker said the society lacks the budget to cover travel and accommodations for the presenter and asked the commission to consider helping arrange funding or partnerships. “Our little nonprofit is not really suited size wise and monetarily to bring her across the country,” the society president said, noting the speaker has ties to the area and was willing to travel for minimal fee.
Valerie Moore said the Brewery Arts Center would provide the venue: “The Brewery Arts Center is happy to give you the space, for the event.” Mike Smith, who said he attended school with the speaker, supported the idea and offered to help. Chair Bethany Drysdale said the commission itself does not have a spending budget but encouraged the group to look for partnerships including Visit Carson City and other community organizations that might provide hotel or travel support.
Commissioners asked for more information, including a biography and cost estimate, and the Historical Society representative said she would provide a detailed bio via email. No formal action or funding commitment was made at the meeting; commissioners directed staff and community partners to explore sponsorships and report back.
