Wylie parks board approves Jan. minutes and permits for Welch run, Juneteenth festival

The Wylie Parks and Recreation Board voted to approve the Jan. 13 meeting minutes and granted permits for two community events during its March 10 meeting at City Council Chambers.
Board actions were routine and noncontroversial: members approved the minutes, the First Lieutenant Robert F. Welch III charity’s Run for Our Heroes 5K and walk at Old City Park on April 26, 2025, and the Juneteenth Festival of Wylie at Old City Park on June 14, 2025.
The approvals matter to residents because the events bring vendors, road closures and public-safety coordination to Old City Park and surrounding streets. Applicants told the board they plan community-focused activities and services for veterans, families and children.
Minutes approval: Tara Harrison moved to approve the Jan. 13, 2025, Parks and Recreation Board minutes; Nick Pointer seconded. The chair called the motion approved with five members voting in favor; two members were not in attendance (Brian Arnold and Senay Turner).
Run for Our Heroes permit: The board heard from Becky Welch, founder of the First Lieutenant Robert F. Welch III charity, who said, “This will be the fourteenth year that we host the Run for Our Heroes.” The event is scheduled for April 26 at Old City Park and will include a 5K, a 1-mile walk, a vendor fair running roughly 8 a.m.–2 p.m., live music and children’s activities. Welch said the charity will provide a free breakfast for veterans, first responders and Gold Star families and will make donations to the Wylie Police and Fire departments. Mr. Puente moved to approve the permit; Tara Harrison seconded. The board approved the permit with five yes votes.
Juneteenth Festival permit: A representative for Juneteenth of Wylie, identified in the meeting as Mr. Johnson, described the event as a community education and celebration day with vendors, live entertainment and children’s activities. Johnson said the festival will run June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with vendor setup beginning early that morning and street closures for safety. Scott moved to approve the permit; Miss Suarez seconded. The chair announced the motion carried (the chair recorded the vote as “yeses have it”). Johnson told the board that, “hopefully, if approved here and approved at the city council meeting, I just want to extend an invitation for everybody to come out,” indicating the applicant expects city council review as a next step.
Other formal actions: The board also approved a motion to adjourn the meeting; the motion passed after a second.
