Shelby County commission approves $375,000 to finish Corrections training academy

Jonathan Russell, Division of Corrections administrator of finance, told the committee the funds will finish the training academy to allow the county to train 93 correction officers as part of an upcoming training partnership in addition to training its own complement of staff. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about whether the funds were new; Russell and staff confirmed the monies were already allocated in the FY 2025 capital budget. The committee vote recorded four “aye” votes in favor of the referral with a favorable recommendation.
Why it matters: The training academy is intended to expand the county’s capacity to train correction officers for both county needs and collaborative training ventures. Completing the facility is a near-term capital priority with a direct operational impact on correction staffing and training schedules.
