Kansas Senate adopts resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority

The Kansas State Senate adopted a resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated for its service and advocacy during the chamber’s March 10 session.
Senate Resolution 17-13, introduced on the floor as a recognition of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s scholarship, service and advocacy, was read by the clerk and placed before the chamber. A motion to suspend the rules and adopt the resolution was made and the Senate adopted it by voice vote.
The resolution traces the sorority’s founding at Howard University in 1908 and notes its international membership and graduate and undergraduate chapters in Kansas, including at the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Washburn University and Wichita State University. The resolution commends members’ community service, scholarship programs and work on issues such as health screenings and scholarships.
Reverend Nori Ross, introduced as the guest chaplain from the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lawrence, offered a multi-paragraph prayer before the resolution was considered. In her remarks, Ross asked that senators be “empowered to do the people’s work” and prayed for “grace to acknowledge when they got it wrong and to make a different choice.”
Senator Haley (Wyandotte) added remarks welcoming the sorority members in the gallery and praising their long-term community advocacy. Several named sorority members in attendance were acknowledged from the chamber floor.
Following the acknowledgments, a senator moved an emergency declaration, suspension of the rules and adoption of SR 17-13; the motion was approved by voice vote and the resolution was adopted.
The resolution was adopted as a ceremonial recognition; no further legislative action or appropriation was attached to the resolution.
