Board approves updated 2025 school calendars; summer camps and EOG/EOC summer-school guidelines cleared

The Columbus County Board of Education approved updated 2025 calendars and summer-program guidance during its February meeting.
Tamara Carter, presenting on behalf of district curriculum and accountability, told the board the traditional-school calendar needed two additional optional teacher workdays to meet the district’s required 215 teacher workdays; the board approved adding June 13 and June 16 as optional teacher workdays. Carter said traditional schools still had adequate instructional hours remaining under the calendar presented.
The board separately approved the Columbus Career and College Academy (CCCA) calendar. Carter said CCCA’s shorter instructional day required different adjustments: Good Friday (April 18) will be a school day for CCCA and May 22 will be the school’s last day; the board-approved staff optional workdays for CCCA are May 27 and May 28. Board members confirmed the dates would not conflict with CCCA’s prom and graduation schedule.
Carter also presented the district’s Read to Achieve summer-camp schedule and the 2025 EOG/EOC summer-school and retesting guidelines. She told the board the Read to Achieve program will follow the same multi-week schedule used the previous year, with bus transportation provided for eligible students and second- and third-grade students included. For summer EOG/EOC remediation, Carter said a new state science assessment delayed results and the district will not offer a separate summer science remediation this year; remediation and retesting plans will cover math and English EOCs/EOGs on the schedule presented. Carter recommended approval of the Read to Achieve camp and the EOG/EOC summer-school guidelines; the board approved both.
Board discussion touched on attendance and participation: Carter said elementary and middle school families typically respond to teacher/parent outreach and that the district cannot compel attendance by state rule but can strongly encourage participation. A board member asked for future analysis on how summer participation affects subsequent-year performance; staff said they could review that data at the end of the school year.
