UN reports killings and mass displacement in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo provinces

The United Nations reported renewed clashes in parts of North and South Kivu provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with reports of a hospital hit by shelling and civilians killed.
Humanitarian partners told the briefing that shelling struck a hospital in South Kivu, killing five health-care providers and four patients, including one child. In North Kivu, local civil society groups reported dozens of civilians, including many children, killed in Masisi and further clashes forcing thousands to flee. Humanitarians also said violence is hampering access to roughly 100,000 displaced people in neighboring territories.
Why it matters: attacks on health facilities and on civilians further limit lifesaving assistance and increase displacement. The spokesperson reminded parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law and urged all feasible precautions to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The UN said it continues to follow reports from local partners and urged respect for humanitarian access and protection of civilians as clashes continue.
