For a broader perspective, the examiner presented combined figures for Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale counties: 1,119 cases investigated in 2024 and 329 autopsies performed at the Jackson County morgue for the three-county region.
The examiner reported 71 cases investigated in January by the Jackson County office alone and described the cooler as at full occupancy, with current capacity indicated at about 10 spaces. The office has ordered two new stainless-steel carts from a local fabricator to improve equipment quality, and staff are seeking caster replacements for other carts because of wear and brake failures on existing wheels.
The examiner said the office participated in an introductory meeting of the county’s overdose fatality review team coordinated by the health department’s opioid-education coordinator.
Commissioners moved to receive the medical examiner’s report.
