Board extends beginning-teacher support contract through May 31 after staff says short-term cost is modest

The Caswell County Schools board voted to extend a contract for beginning-teacher support services through May 31, 2025, after staff described recent monitoring visits, school-level coaching work and a positive audit of the district’s beginning-teacher program.

Administrators said the contracted coordinator (identified in meeting materials as providing mentor support and district-level liaison work) has supported beginning teachers, worked with instructional coaches and met with state reviewers during a five-year program monitoring visit. Staff distributed a contact log showing individual school visits over the preceding weeks and told the board principals and instructional coaches had provided letters of support.

District staff clarified contract costing: the full-year cap shown on the contract was $40,000, but the extension period discussed at the meeting (roughly two-and-a-half months remaining in the school year) would cost about $8,000 on a prorated basis. Staff said this extension would help maintain support for beginning teachers and would not preclude continuing other Title II spending priorities.

Board discussion raised questions about the scope of the coordinator’s time in schools versus central-office tasks. Several board members asked for clarity on how much time the coordinator spends in classrooms and asked staff to include contact-duration details in future logs. Administrators said they had asked both coordinator and staff to begin logging visits and times to provide greater transparency.

On motion, the board approved the contract extension. Staff said they will return with more detailed logs showing visit duration and activities.
