Taylor Foundation gives MAPS $100,000 for student field trips, board accepts donation

MANKATO — The Taylor Foundation donated $100,000 to Mankato Area Public Schools to expand student field‑trip opportunities and reduce transportation barriers, district officials announced at Thursday’s school board meeting.

Travis Olson, MAPS director of teaching and learning, thanked the foundation and described the gift as "an incredible gift to fund field trips and student experiences that ensure students have opportunities to learn beyond the classroom." Olson said the donation will "directly support" MAPS’ mission of "excellence, equity and empowerment."

Representing the Taylor Foundation, Megan said the foundation focused discussions with the district on where funding would have the greatest impact and identified transportation as a key expense that can limit access to field trips. "After having multiple conversations with additional community members, it sounded like transportation was a big focus area," Megan said. "We wanted to help make sure that those kids that may not have access to those experiences would have that."

Board members acknowledged the gift during a special‑recognition portion of the meeting. Later in the consent agenda the board voted to accept a slate of gifts and grants; the motions to accept donations were passed by roll call (see related meeting roundup).

Why it matters: The donation is intended to increase students’ access to experiential learning by covering costs that often prevent participation, including bus transportation. The district said funds will be used to expand field‑trip opportunities for students across MAPS.
