The Hardee County School Board approved a recommendation from the insurance review committee to contribute an additional $1 million to the district’s fSHIP insurance fund, with 90 percent of the amount to be paid by the school district and 10 percent by employees through payroll deductions from February 2025 through September 2025.
Board members voiced reluctance but said they saw little alternative to maintain employee coverage. One member asked staff to explore whether capital outlay savings from recent land‑purchase planning could be used instead to shield employees from the payroll deduction; district staff replied that such transfers are uncertain and would require further legal/accounting review.
During debate board members discussed intent to revisit options later if funds become available and expressed a desire to restore fuller employer coverage in future budgets. The motion to implement the committee’s recommendation passed by voice vote.
The motion includes that any reinsurance recoveries will return to the insurance reserves, as stated by staff at the meeting.
