Board approves three new high‑school electives; district posts updated course catalog

Doctor Yost presented the courses to the board and said the catalog will include any newly approved classes. The three courses approved for next year are: a Leadership elective within the social sciences, a Math Analysis course intended as an alternate sequence (algebra‑focused, positioned between Algebra II and precalculus), and a Composition and Songwriting elective aimed primarily at band and choral students. The board approved the additions by voice vote, 7–0.
Yost said the math and leadership courses would initially be offered at Abingdon High School, and the songwriting/composition course at John S. Battle, with plans to expand offerings to other schools if student interest and teacher endorsements permit. Yost and board members noted that the music composition course is intended for students with existing musical experience; the district will consider cross‑site delivery, including remote instruction, if demand warrants.
Superintendent Dr. Perrigan and board members thanked curriculum staff for producing a visually navigable course catalog; Dr. Perrigan said he had translations added (Spanish) and that the catalog will be posted on the district website. Scheduling for the coming year has already begun at high schools, and middle‑school scheduling will follow.
Board members asked about teacher endorsements and whether new hires were needed; staff said current personnel with appropriate endorsements will teach the courses initially and that the district will monitor demand.
