State contractor to help secure Eureka’s water and sewer systems, council told

Councilman Greg Evans reported that state-contracted cybersecurity specialists visited last week to assess the city's water, sewer and SCADA infrastructure and proposed installing a protective firewall and related security measures.
Evans said contractors described recent cyber incidents that affected other Utah cities’ utility systems and billing, and they proposed protections to reduce that risk. “They come out and did essentially looked at what we had. Ours is very simple,” Evans said, adding the proposed installation would be paid for by the state and would allow existing remote access through TeamViewer to continue.
Evans said the contractors indicated they would keep some administrative access while giving city staff operational access, and that the installation would be “pretty uninterrupted.” He also said he planned to follow up with the contractor to clarify what remote-support services they would provide.
Councilors asked staff to schedule the installation and to provide a briefing on how the protections would affect operations and remote access. No procurement or local match was required at the meeting.
