Nederberg said the shared bookmobile model may lower per‑jurisdiction cost if Eureka joins an existing run. He described the alternative pilot as a locker system that would allow residents to order books online and retrieve them from a secure locker using a code: “They basically would give us, like, an Amazon locker type system,” he said.
Councilors discussed cost history and sustainability. Nederberg and others noted that, historically, costs have risen and that continuing operations can be expensive: one discussion referenced a previous county request of about $80,000 that the county declined to fund. A council speaker said Vernon historically paid roughly $4,000–$5,000 for its bookmobile share in earlier years, though participants acknowledged that figures may have changed.
Nederberg said two school-board members had previously raised interest in a joint partnership and that he expected the school district would likely be interested in coordinating or cost‑sharing. He said the library representatives will prepare a written proposal and return to the council to explore funding options between the city and the school district. No formal commitment or funding decision was made at the meeting.
