Council hears Inland Port briefing; no decisions made

Council members heard a presentation and discussion about Utah's Inland Port program and potential project financing on Feb. 18, but made no policy decisions.

The presentation, arranged by San Juan County's economic development director and delivered by an Inland Port representative (Jenna Draper), outlined how an inland-port project area could be used to encourage certain types of development and how tax-revenue mechanisms might return funds for community projects. Council members emphasized that the briefing did not involve logistics, large freight operations or a physical inland-port facility in Bluff and that the town would not be accepting large-scale truck-based logistics projects as part of this conversation.

Council members described the session as preliminary and said more public information and discussion would be needed before the town could decide whether to pursue any inland-port-related project. One council member raised concerns about county-level "big box" rezoning and litigation in parts of San Juan County and asked whether inland-port work would intersect with those unresolved matters; the Inland Port representative said that the specific big-box resolution discussed by the county was not part of the projects presented to Bluff.

Participants suggested additional educational briefings and that any choice to pursue inland-port options would require public outreach, specification of project areas and careful coordination with county officials. Council members said they would invite the Inland Port representative back for further discussion if there is interest to proceed.
