Maryland Commission on Civil Rights asks for 15 positions to shrink case backlog; audit findings cited

The Maryland Commission on Civil Rights (MCCR) told the House Health and Social Services Subcommittee on Jan. 29 that the governor's fiscal 2026 allowance would allow the agency to add staff to address a persistent backlog of discrimination complaints.
Natalie Andrade, the Department of Legislative Services analyst for MCCR, opened the presentation with budget figures: the commission's fiscal 2026 allowance increases by $970,000 (16.1%) to about $7 million. Andrade noted that personal expenses account for about 89% of the proposed fiscal 2026 budget and that DLS recommended committee narrative asking the commission to report on the effect of adding the proposed positions on backlog management.
