Accessibility ordinance continued to Feb. 10 for further stakeholder work
Summary

The committee continued an ordinance that would amend the building, administrative and public works codes to remove the local requirement that existing buildings with a place of public accommodation have all primary entries and paths of travel accessible to persons with disabilities or obtain a city determination of equivalent facilitation, technical infeasibility, or unreasonable hardship.
Calvin Ho, legislative aide to Board President Mandelmann, told the committee that since the item was last before the committee the President’s office had met with community stakeholders and that “we still need a little bit more time just to iron out some of the DPLs for the ordinance.” He asked that the item be continued to the committee’s Feb. 10 meeting. The sponsor confirmed the continuance request.
Chair Mirna Melgar moved to continue the ordinance to the committee’s Feb. 10, 2025 meeting; the motion passed on a voice vote recorded as two ayes, with Supervisor Cheyenne Chen excused. No public commenters spoke during the item at this hearing.
Committee members noted the item had been continued previously to a date certain and that additional stakeholder consultation would be used to refine the ordinance language and any implementing directives (DPLs). The committee did not take final action on the ordinance; the continuance schedules additional opportunity for outreach and drafting work before the committee considers the item again on Feb. 10.
