The Mayor's Committee for People with Disabilities met on Friday, June 13 and conducted routine business, approved meeting minutes with an amendment, adopted a list of candidate qualities to guide community participation in city hiring panels, and set several follow-up items for future meetings.
The committee approved the minutes from its May 9 meeting as amended to change two items to reference Commissioner Arellano instead of Commissioner Visayo. Chair Kelly moved to approve the minutes as amended; Commissioner Kristen Visal seconded. Vice Chair Elizabeth Meyer said she would abstain because she had not been present at the prior meeting; the committee then took the vote and the motion passed.
Later in the meeting the committee voted to approve a short list of candidate qualities and interview questions developed by a working group that the committee will provide to city hiring panels when committee members participate as community representatives. Commissioner Elizabeth Meyer moved to approve the list; Commissioner Kristen Visal seconded. The motion passed by voice vote.
The committee recorded several future agenda and follow-up items: staff were asked to accept contact information from Convo Communications regarding the Convo Access interpreter service and to place a discussion item on a future agenda; staff will pursue invitations to Capital Metro representatives or City Council members who sit on the Capital Metro board to discuss transit policing and community care specialists; committee members agreed to pursue further information on expanding therapeutic recreation services to South Austin with Parks and Recreation staff; and the ABILITY celebration working group will continue planning and consult staff about Texas Open Meetings Act posting requirements.
