Mayfield considers new five-year White Sanitation contract; council leans to phased price increase

The company offered two pricing options: a one-time flat increase to $13 per month for a curbside can, or a phased approach that would raise the base by $0.50 in each contract year (the company said the net cost over the five-year term would be similar). The clerk said residents are currently billed $10.75 per month for basic service and that an additional $4 monthly landfill fee is collected to cover disposal costs.
The sanitation representative told the council the cost of containers and fuel have risen since the town’s prior contract; the company said a can that cost roughly $45 five years ago now approaches $70. The company also proposed a $1 monthly increase for rented containers and noted fuel surcharges would continue to fluctuate with market prices.
Council members discussed which model would be easier for budgeting and which would be easier for residents on fixed incomes. One council member said an incremental increase would be easier for fixed-income households; another noted a flat-rate change simplifies billing. Members generally expressed a preference for the phased increase and asked the company to return with a final contract in July.
White Sanitation representatives also compared neighboring cities’ rates for context: Ephraim’s recently renewed one-can rate was cited around $13.80 for can-only service; another nearby city was cited at higher rates for multiple cans and for exclusion of yard waste pickup.
No formal contract vote was taken on June 11; the item was placed on the July agenda for final action.
