The Conway Design Review Board approved restoration work for the Riverfront Park public restrooms and approved a proposed mural to be painted on the rebuilt wall by students associated with the mayor's youth advisory council and Conway High School.
Staff described repeated flood damage to the existing restroom structure and proposed replacing the current siding with a more durable brick facade to align visually with new downtown restrooms and public facilities. Staff said administration reviewed earlier renderings and opted for a brick finish rather than painted siding so the building would better match other downtown improvements.
Board members and staff discussed flood-compatibility and the nearby pump-house concrete structure. Staff noted there is work under way with a nonprofit to improve the pump house facade and that the restroom wall will be prepared to receive mural work.
The proposed mural concept was developed with the mayor's youth advisory council and Conway High School students; staff said the students envisioned a mural of the Conway tiger drinking from the Waccamaw River. The board discussed adding a permanent plaque or sign acknowledging Conway High School and the student artists; staff and the building shop said they could produce a sign or plaque.
A board member moved to accept both the Riverfront Park restroom restoration and the mural as presented; the board voted in favor (voice vote). Staff estimated the brickwork could begin within about a month and said the student mural timing will depend on student availability during the summer, requiring coordination.
Implementation notes: administration and Public Works will coordinate the brick restoration; staff will confirm the mural schedule with the high school and will provide a plaque recognizing student contributions.
