Winona Area Public School District staff detailed plans to implement McGraw-Hill's Reveal math series for kindergarten through eighth grade and to use related resources for some secondary special-education courses.
Director Brian (presenter) said the curriculum aligns to the Minnesota 2022 math standards and that the rollout will emphasize conceptual understanding, application to real-world problems and procedural skill and fluency. The plan includes summer webinars and paid professional-learning hours for teachers, a three-hour introductory session during workshop week, and follow-up sessions in October and January. Staff also described MH Plus (the personalization/differentiation component) and a demo site teachers can access before students are rostered.
Board members asked how the standards and curriculum changes will affect standardized testing, how the district will support teachers who are hesitant or need extra training, and whether the district can show grade-by-grade slides illustrating curricular changes. Dr. Brandon (state standards context) explained the state revises standards on a roughly 10-year cycle and the 2022 standards will phase in across several years; full assessment alignment (MCA implementation) will come later in the multiyear timeline.
Staff said the math team began reviewing draft standards and vendor materials about a year before the decision and narrowed vendor options through classroom and vendor reviews; Reveal finished its alignment to the new standards earlier than other vendors and that speed contributed to selection. Trustees asked staff to return with examples that show how concepts spiral across grades and to provide a fuller budget and training timeline for board review.
Ending: Staff will prepare grade-level examples of the curriculum sequence, provide a detailed cost breakdown and report on teacher training plans and timelines at a future board meeting.
