The Santa Barbara City Council on June 10 adopted an ordinance amending the city's contract with the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) to extend local safety membership to include airport police officers.
Labor relations manager San Ramirez told the council the election of affected employees had been completed and certified. The contract amendment requires a 20-day period between introduction and adoption; that period had elapsed. Ramirez requested the council amend the ordinance's effective date provision to make the ordinance effective 30 days after adoption to conform with city charter provisions.
Council Member Sneddon moved to adopt the ordinance with the revised Section 3 (30-day effective date). The motion was seconded and, on roll-call, the council voted to adopt the ordinance. The clerk noted one councilmember was not present for the vote; among those present the ordinance was adopted.
