Committee reallocates funds for countywide cybersecurity; IT director updates committee on hack recovery

Wayne County reallocated funds to strengthen cybersecurity across departments and the CIO said the final step in recovery from last fall’s hack is moving files from legacy servers to SharePoint.
The committee approved a reallocation of central-services funds to bolster countywide cybersecurity tools and protocols, and the county’s information-technology director provided an update on recovery work after a cybersecurity incident last fall.
Hector Roman, chief information officer and director of information technology, told the committee that funds received from M and B were used to implement new security tools and protocols across county offices, including Proofpoint for email protection. Roman said Proofpoint has been protecting 99.9% of emails entering the county system since December. The reallocation is intended to continue the rollout of security licenses and tools countywide.
Commissioner Anderson asked for a recovery update from the hack that occurred last fall. Roman described the remaining recovery work as restoring legacy file-server data and migrating those files to SharePoint, which he described as a more robust platform.
“As far as the recovery, the last remaining piece ... is just kind of restoring files from our legacy file servers. And now from there, we're working with departments and moving those files over to SharePoint,” Roman said.
The funding adjustment passed as part of the committee’s consolidated approvals.
