Treasurer’s office to deploy new mobile unit for taxpayer services; committee funds fuel and maintenance

The committee approved a reallocation from the property tax forfeiture fund to pay for fuel and maintenance for a newly delivered mobile office that will carry out taxpayer services across Wayne County.
John Adams, chief deputy treasurer, said the mobile unit has been delivered but not yet deployed because the county needs to hire a driver. Once staffed, Adams said, the unit will visit local events and partner with agencies to provide onsite services, allow residents to make payments, enroll in payment plans and receive counseling.
“The benefit is to go out directly to the communities … reach the population better and reduce the traffic and the inconvenience of coming downtown,” Adams said. He described the unit as accessible for people with disabilities (it has a lift), and said it will be equipped with computers, printers, staff and two seats for service transactions.
Commissioners asked about scheduling and community notification; Adams said a deployment schedule has been developed and will be shared with commissioners. The item was approved as part of the committee’s consent package.
