Committee approves $43,000 reallocation to buy laptops for court clerks

The Wayne County Committee on Ways and Means approved a budget reallocation of $43,000 from the court’s savings to purchase laptops for court clerks, the county’s chief deputy clerk said.
Duane Seals, chief deputy clerk, told the committee the purchase addresses recurring situations in which court clerks must continue work when a judge or courtroom is not available or when buildings are closed. Seals said the county bought laptop computers at the CJC Center and will maintain them through court IT; clerks will sign out laptops as needed so work can continue outside the courthouse.
“Many times ... our court clerks find themselves [when] the judges may not be in,” Seals said. “In order for them to continue working, they need to have a system to be able to take home.”
Commissioner Anderson asked whether the expense should have been included during the primary budget process or whether it reflected a reallocation of existing funds; Seals said the county was moving money between line items and used savings in the court budget to pay for the computers.
The reallocation was part of a bundle of items approved by the committee. The presentation did not identify additional ongoing maintenance costs beyond standard court IT support.
