Council backs town-wide public‑art 'hearts' project to boost downtown vibrancy

The Leesburg Town Council unanimously endorsed a proposed town‑wide sculpture initiative June 10 that would install a series of heart sculptures downtown to showcase local artists and draw visitors.
Jeanette Ward, representing the Commission on Public Art, and fellow commission member Tiara described the proposal as a community-building arts project modeled on similar programs elsewhere. Ward said the commission envisions private sponsors covering most installation costs, with the commission providing the call to artists and seed funds already approved in its budget.
“We'd like to showcase local artists. It's really a community building as well as tourism,” Ward said. The commission suggested an initial set of 10 locations in historic downtown, with flexibility to place additional sculptures on private property with sponsor support.
Councilmember Steinberg moved to endorse the public‑art project, Councilmember Cummings seconded, and the council approved the endorsement 7-0.
The commission and staff said they will return to council with location details, calls to artists, and the sponsorship plan as the program moves into implementation.
