The vote followed a motion to ratify an individual discussed in closed session. Trustee Fowler moved to ratify the appointment; a second was offered by Trustee Mike. "All trustees have voted. All 7 vote in the affirmative. The motion carries," the board secretary announced after the roll call.
Superintendent Dr. Smith told trustees that Dr. Champion was unable to attend the meeting because he was relocating from Oregon, and described Champion's background. "Brett comes to us bringing over 34 years in public education experience, including 23 years in leadership," Dr. Smith said, adding that Champion served most recently as superintendent in Medford, Oregon, and previously had roles in Klein ISD and Leander ISD. According to Dr. Smith, Champion has led strategic planning efforts, improved instructional practices and expanded access to early childhood education.
Trustees did not take additional public comment on the appointment during the open meeting. Dr. Smith said Dr. Champion will be in Arlington for transition activities before assuming the role full time in July.
The board's motion carried by a 7-0 vote. The ratification concludes the district's closed-session appointment process and moves Dr. Champion toward onboarding and transition work with Arlington ISD leadership.
