The Washington City Planning Commission on June 4 voted unanimously to recommend approval of Z-25-15, a request to rezone about 0.76 acres at 181 East 200 North (the Covington House) from R-16 to AP (Adaptive/Assembly/Preservation-style zoning).
Staff explained the city purchased the Covington House more than a decade ago and that neighbors had previously expressed concern about event uses displacing parking into adjacent streets. Staff said the city has since acquired and improved an adjacent lot to the north with on-site parking and restroom facilities. Staff recommended the commission forward approval to City Council.
No members of the public objected during the public hearing. Commissioner Richard Davis made a motion to recommend approval; Commissioner Anderson seconded. The commission voted 3-0 to forward a recommendation for approval to City Council.
The rezoning request will now appear on the City Council agenda for final action. If the council approves the zoning change, it would clear the way for the council to consider whether to make the house available for community gatherings and rentals, subject to any future conditions or use permits the council sets.
