Sullivan County Clerk Russell updated the Government Services Committee on widespread scam text messages targeting residents and provided an overview of county clerk and DMV services.
Russell said the county has received hundreds of calls from residents about text messages telling recipients their E-ZPass or driver''s licenses are overdue or will be suspended, and warned that the state will not contact residents via text to demand payment or personal information. "If you get one of those, you can ignore it," Russell said.
The clerk described heavy office demand, saying staff handle "thousands of people" each month and process passport applications and Real ID services. He reminded residents that a valid passport qualifies as federal identification for travel and government access, and encouraged people who need a Real ID or passport to make early appointments.
County board members and other speakers praised the clerk''s staff for managing large volumes of customers during peak periods and for handling a recent on-site medical emergency professionally. Russell said he will propose funding for a DMV remodel in the county budget to address outmoded counters and equipment, including an additional camera to reduce lines.
The clerk also noted press releases about scams and said the state has issued similar warnings; the county has been publicizing the fraud alerts.
Board members expressed appreciation for the clerk's office and encouraged continued public outreach about scams and early appointments for Real IDs and passports.
