District staff raise concerns on professional development access, reading interventionists and conference opportunities

Trustees asked whether professional development and conference opportunities were equally available across staff after suggestion-box responses said the same people often attend training and conferences.

District staff told the board that the district issues a professional-development calendar and provides "on demand" training through contracted providers. A staff speaker said the district has book studies and summer programs offering graduate credit and that about "39 people signed up so far for our next cohort next year." The district also reported having over 30 people planning to attend a summer conference in Lake Tahoe.

Trustees asked how many dedicated reading-intervention teacher leaders exist. A district speaker said each school has at least two teacher leaders who serve as reading interventionists. Board members discussed whether schools should rotate conference attendance to expand participation. No policy change was adopted; staff said most conference and travel decisions are made at the school site and encouraged staff to request opportunities through their administrators.

Trustees asked staff to review communication about available PD and to consider whether access to conferences could be made more equitable. The board did not approve new PD policy at the meeting.
