Douglas High SkillsUSA presents year of competitions, community service; eight students bound for nationals

Andrea Barriardos, a SkillsUSA adviser at Douglas High School, told the Douglas Unified School District governing board that SkillsUSA had 143 members this year and eight campus chapters.
“SkillsUSA is the largest CTSO on Douglas High School’s campus now with 143 total members,” Barriardos said during the board’s reports section. She provided a chapter-by-chapter breakdown that listed drafting (16), automotive (13), construction (16), computer maintenance (13), engineering (31), firefighting (10), law enforcement (15) and film and TV (29).
The presentation summarized community-service events — a trunk-or-treat, a drive-in movie, Veterans Day parade cleanup, a Black History Month celebration, a dog rescue drive, a toy drive and a children’s reading event — and described student leadership activities including regional conferences, industry tours (Northrop Grumman in Sierra Vista, a U of A mining engineering visit) and alumni mentorship at regional contests.
Angelique, a SkillsUSA student, described the chapter motto: “lift while we climb,” saying the phrase reflects a goal of helping peers as members advance. Barriardos said the chapter brought 51 competitors to regional contests in Tucson and 67 competitors to state championships, producing 21 state medalists and three state chapter gold awards (engineering, drafting and film).
Barriardos also listed region officers from Douglas elected to Region 6: Elijah Barriardos (president), Santiago Salinas (vice president), Sebastian Salas (treasurer) and Vanessa Pimueles (historian). She told the board that eight students will travel to the SkillsUSA national conference in Atlanta on June 22: Elijah, Alejandro, Alina, Isaac, Elena, Fernanda and two others identified in the packet.
Board members praised the program during the meeting. Board member John Lindeman called the chapter a “tight-knit group” and praised students who returned as alumni judges. Board members said the program’s industry linkages and the district’s signing day events highlighted career pathways beyond athletics.
The presentation concluded with students and advisers thanking the board and district administrators for support of SkillsUSA and the opportunity to compete and attend leadership events.
