Board approves transfer of SAFEKA flood-mitigation funds for insurance premiums in impacted neighborhoods

The Board on June 3 approved a consent-calendar resolution allowing the Director of the Department of Water Resources to accept Beachstone Lake Area Flood Mitigation funds from the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFEKA).
Supervisor Hume had questions about the history and remaining balances for the program. Amitosh Sandy, chief of the drainage division in Department of Water Resources, told the board the current transfer totals about $797,000. Sandy said the county plans to use the funds to pay flood-insurance premiums for affected properties for at least the next two years, then reassess whether other measures or improvements would better reduce risk.
Sandy said studies in the McCormick Williamson tract and Morrison Creek resulted in reductions to modeled water-surface elevations of roughly a quarter to four-tenths of a foot, but that those changes did not remove homes from FEMA floodplain designations. "These will only change when FEMA decides to remap the area," Sandy said. Sandy added that FEMA currently has no immediate plans to remap the floodplain.
The item was included in the consent calendar and passed as part of the board's consent approval; the board recorded a unanimous vote among members present.
