San Antonio city staff on Wednesday described an array of free and reduced-cost summer youth programs across multiple departments, and said they are building a single online portal to make registration and program information easier to find.
The briefing, delivered by Assistant City Manager David McCary, covered Parks and Recreation, the Public Library, the Department of Human Services (DHS), the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) and the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). McCary said the city’s summer offerings include camps, teen clubs, aquatics programming and job-readiness internships.
McCary said the Parks and Recreation Department aligns programming calendars with 20 parks and 23 schools and runs four summer teen club sites for ages 13–18 that operate for eight weeks from June through August. “There are variety of camps, free events, and ways to stay cool,” McCary said.
The Parks department told council members that 24 outdoor pools will open this season and that the department has added free group swimming lessons with three two-week sessions offered to participants from 6 months to adults. Parks is also hiring summer program staff and lifeguards;…
