Committee members described several local, small, and relatively localized sinkholes near private properties (including one described near a residence on Shafer Lane and a hollowing in the road near a large tree) and said those occurrences merit a town-maintained log and an outreach item advising prospective builders to obtain site-specific geotechnical information as part of the permitting process.
The committee discussed characterization and probability: sinkholes and subsidence in the area are most likely to be localized, often associated with a fault or local soil conditions, and would have variable magnitude depending on location. Members asked staff to reference Dowling/USGS mapping where appropriate and to include an action to maintain a simple town log of known sinkholes or depressions and to add an educational note to the plan advising property owners to undertake due-diligence geotechnical studies when building.
On mitigation, members suggested monitoring known depressions and listing a short emergency protocol (observe and report, photograph, record location, notify town staff) if a sinkhole expands or threatens infrastructure. The committee declined to draft an elaborate emergency-response procedure at this stage but asked for a pragmatic monitoring-and-notice action.
Ending: Staff will add the UGS/USGS citation, a sinkhole log action and an education note about site-specific geotechnical review to the draft plan.
