Darien officials outline AI guidance, data filters and high-school phone pouch pilot

The Darien Board of Education received an update on instructional technology and district rules for personal smart devices, including guidance for staff on generative artificial intelligence tools, data-privacy vetting for third-party software, and an evolving cell-phone protocol at Darien High School.
Tim McGuire, the district’s instructional technology coordinator, told the board “AI is here,” and said staff have focused on building teacher capacity this year through more than a dozen professional learning sessions and a district technology council that created guidance for classroom use. McGuire said the district’s digital library now lists 16 third‑party tools that have been vetted for student data privacy; of those, 10 remain restricted to staff use for the coming year.
McGuire said the district is preparing for new federal guidance tied to a recent presidential executive order on artificial intelligence, and that staff have emphasized three strands in training: tool fluency (how to prompt and evaluate outputs), ethical awareness (privacy, bias and misinformation), and process transparency (clarifying when AI was used in student work). He described classroom approaches ranging from banning AI for specific assignments to requiring students to treat AI as a “thought partner” and to evaluate its output.
On device-management, staff announced a change to district Chromebooks: student access to YouTube will be set to a full block by default on school-provided Chromebooks to reduce unmonitored browsing at home. Teachers will still be able to assign specific YouTube videos through Google Classroom or other vetted platforms; staff accounts retain full access for instructional purposes.
The high school’s new cell‑phone protocol, which restricts phone access during unstructured times such as lunch and hallway transitions, was the subject of extended discussion. Administrators presented a pouch/pilot approach already tested at other schools and said the high school had 200 trial pouches available this spring (about 50 with locks, 50 magnetically sealed). Administrators said seniors would be treated differently under the plan.
Board members questioned logistics, reuse and pricing of pouches. The district initially cited a cost estimate of roughly $17,000 for 1,100 pouches but then reported tariff-driven price increases that put the estimate nearer $26,000; staff said final selection of pouch type (lockable vs. magnetic) remained to be decided by high‑school administrators and student leadership. Questions included how pouches would be distributed and collected daily, whether they would be reusable year-to-year, and the plan for executive-function supports for students accustomed to using phones for schedules.
Other near-term technology adjustments: the district plans to switch from GoGuardian to Securly for web‑filtering as a budgetary change, reduce paid Nearpod licenses to a smaller set of heavy users, and eliminate paid Zoom accounts in favor of free tiers of video-conferencing tools. McGuire said staff will receive training on the new filtering tool in August and September.
Ending: The board asked for more detail on pouch procurement (final price and model), an operational plan for pouch distribution, and materials describing how AI guidance will be embedded in curriculum; administrators agreed to bring that information back to the board’s June meeting.
