Board directs county surveyor to restore lost public land survey corners under ORS requirement

Klamath County’s surveyor told the Board of County Commissioners that Oregon law requires a county court or board directive before a county surveyor may proportion in a lost public land survey system (PLSS) corner, and the board voted to authorize the surveyor to restore lost corners as needed.
Cheryl Petro, the county surveyor, said she learned at a recent conference that restoring lost corners requires a formal directive from the county court or BOCC under ORS. She told commissioners the surveyor’s office follows established procedures to ensure corners are truly lost and restored correctly.
A motion that the BOCC direct the county surveyor to restore lost PLSS corners when the surveyor deems it necessary was moved and seconded; the vote passed by voice and the chair voted "aye." Commissioners thanked the surveyor for bringing the matter into compliance with statutory requirements.
Staff will proceed under the directive and carry out restoration work as necessary, following PLSS procedures and reporting restoration activities back to the board.
