Nebraska Game and Parks’ South Central District provided updates on several boating-access and ramp improvement projects across the district and warned that Davis Creek recreation access remains closed while the Lower Loup Natural Resources District repaves roads under Bureau of Reclamation funding.
Agency staff said concrete ramps and courtesy docks are nearing completion at Milligate Midway and Gallagher Canyon on the Tri-County Canal, with improved parking and lighting planned. Two new concrete ramps were built on those canyon lakes, and park staff will perform ongoing maintenance; both sites have been designated state recreation areas (SRA), which requires a parks sticker for vehicle entry.
At Johnson Reservoir, Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District (CNPPID) funded a series of breakwaters and access improvements on the reservoir’s east side. Game and Parks noted a previously existing outlet ramp was removed for safety; CNPPID has additional plans to add courtesy docks and perform future ramp improvements.
Phillips Canyon’s ramp and parking improvements remain under construction in partnership with CNPPID; agency staff said the access road and parking lot are complete but a concrete launch ramp and some amenities remain to be finished, and CNPPID was aiming to complete work this year.
Plum Creek Canyon Reservoir had a stationary dock removed in low-water conditions this spring; staff said a floating dock will be installed in the next few weeks to improve boat access.
Davis Creek Reservoir — a Bureau of Reclamation facility where recreation is managed by the Lower Loup NRD — remains closed to the public for access-area repaving. The Lower Loup NRD project manager told agency staff that heavy concrete work is underway and the area could reopen as early as May 1 and is hoped to be open by mid-May.
Agency boating-access coordinator Zach Horstman and South Central District staff encouraged patience while improvements continue and reminded users that some improved access sites are SRAs requiring a parks sticker for entry.
