Commission approves illuminated monument sign with size and lighting limits on Broadway

The San Antonio Historic Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness for a monument sign on Broadway, setting a maximum height and area and requiring internal illumination that does not reflect onto neighboring properties.

In case 2025‑116, staff recommended denial of a proposed monument sign as submitted because it exceeded UDC height and size limits. The applicant, represented by Bobby Lozaard, revised the proposal during the hearing to a cabinet sign 4 feet by 6 feet with internal illumination and an aluminum skirt; commissioners voted to approve a monument sign not to exceed 6 feet in height and approximately 52 square feet, and they conditioned approval on UDC guidance that the sign not produce glare for adjacent properties.

Lozaard described the revised dimensions and said the sign cabinet would be internally lit with translucent material. Staff and commissioners noted that fully illuminated signs are permitted only so long as they do not create reflections onto neighboring properties. The motion approved the revised monument sign with internal illumination and the applicant was asked to provide final details to staff by email for administrative coordination.
