Board approves $3.9 million in repairs at Thunder Vista K-8; district to seek reimbursements from contractors

A staff presentation said the problems are exacerbated by heaving soils on the school site and by design and construction shortcomings. The work is scheduled while school is out to reduce disruption to instruction.
Funding for the repairs will come from the district's building and capital reserve fund, using the building services reserve and the plant contingency reserve. Meeting materials and staff said the capital reserve had a balance of about $4,290,000 as of April 30, 2025; staff noted the district may recover some costs later through reimbursements, insurance proceeds or settlement payments after pursuing mediation with the project's design team and contractor.
In a narration to the board, a district staff member summarized the scope and the funding source; Superintendent Godowsky said the district believes there were "shortcomings in design and engineering and some in construction" and that the district expects to pursue mediation in hopes of recovering some costs.
Board members cited the operational risk of deferring repairs. The item was presented as board-policy compliance for asset protection; after a motion and second, the board recorded a roll-call approval. Directors Asad Lucas, Battistelli, Goldstein, Marsh Holshin and Potter were recorded as voting aye.
The motion authorizes procurement and repairs to restore functional underground systems, reduce the likelihood of further damage caused by soil movement, and minimize ongoing disruption to students and staff. Staff noted that additional reimbursements or settlements could reduce the net cost to the district after mediation with the project team.
