Kennett district steering committee finalizes draft goals; public draft set for July

District staff told the curriculum committee May 19 that the Kennett Consolidated School District’s strategic planning steering committee has drafted goals and a timeline and will release a public draft for comment July 2.
Dr. Rizzo Saunders, the superintendent, said the steering committee — formed in November and composed of staff, parents, students and community representatives — distilled 21 priorities into five major priority areas: a future‑ready KCSD student experience; high‑quality teaching and learning; an impactful and empowered educational team; an engaged and supportive community; and a 21st‑century learning environment. The subcommittees developed problem statements, success criteria and measurable metrics for each priority area.
“We will be bringing what I would call a drafty draft to the strategic plan committee tomorrow,” Dr. Saunders said, describing a process that included a SWOT analysis, data review and two rounds of subcommittee feedback. She said the administration has worked to refine goals and objectives and will produce a public draft for stakeholder comment by July 2, with the aim of presenting a plan for board approval in August (district staff noted a special August meeting may be needed because the board normally does not meet in August). The district must submit certain components of the plan — a comprehensive plan subset required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education — by Sept. 1.
The strategic plan will also examine specific district priorities raised by the board, including a study of the district’s readiness for a dual‑immersion program and development of a KCSD graduate profile. Dr. Saunders said staff will continue work on problem definitions, baseline data, timelines and ownership for each strategy.
Committee members praised the process and urged staff to keep board members informed about remaining timeline details and any special meeting dates necessary for approval. The teaching and learning department will continue work on a graduate profile and is holding a staff in‑service session to refine draft language.
The steering committee’s schedule calls for content layout and final edits in late May and June, translation of materials, a public comment window in July and final board consideration in August so the district can meet PDE deadlines in September.
