Committee reviews two instructional administrative regulations; staff to update contacts and nondiscrimination language

The Academics Committee received summaries of two instructional administrative regulations on Feb. 25: IS42, governing research conducted in the district, and IS48, governing retention and acceleration policies for students.
Ms. McKenzie, the district’s director of secondary, told the committee IS42 makes minimal but important changes, including adding a nondiscrimination clause to district administrative regulations and updating the research application contact (section 42E) after Lana Simmons moved to another position; the new contact is Denise Hook. Ms. McKenzie said the updated application form with the new contact information is available on the district website.
On IS48 (retention and acceleration), staff said the regulation includes modest edits to clarify communications to families and to align district language with changes at the state level. In particular, the regulation removes a clause saying a student must have “successfully completed the state exit exam” because the South Carolina Department of Education has removed the state exit exam requirement. Staff said IS48 also adds the same nondiscrimination clause being added across administrative regulations and that the redline and final versions are available in committee materials.
Committee members asked whether the district would update the website and application forms to avoid routing research requests to prior staff; staff confirmed the website and application documents would be updated and provided to committee members. No formal action on these administrative regulations was taken in committee on Feb. 25; staff said they would return with final copies and any necessary follow-up.
