Saline County administrator: steering committee meeting on homelessness set for Jan. 13; alcohol-fund allocation to be reviewed

County Administrator Philip Smith Haines told the Saline County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 31 that Celina Grace has set a steering-committee meeting to address homelessness for Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Celina Community Resource Center on Broadway, and asked whether any commissioners would like to participate in the conversation.
Haines said earlier gatherings organized by Celina Grace had been more informational, "and they haven't gathered, they haven't been interested in hearing necessarily for solutions, so" but that the Jan. 13 meeting is intended to have more substantive discussion. "The first meeting ... it was more information, sort of, kind of gathering, who might be interested, kind of thing. But this 1, I think they're intending to actually have some more conversation," Haines said.
Haines also raised the annual allocation of the county's alcohol-fund dollars, noting the item was not on the posted agenda because the need to act came up recently. He asked for volunteers among commissioners to review allocation requests; two commissioners agreed to continue the review and Haines said he would follow up with them after the new year and bring recommendations back to the commission.
In response to a commissioner who asked about intergovernmental coordination on homelessness and the county budget cycle, another commissioner said prior attempts to schedule joint talks with city officials have been challenging but that the county is aiming for late February or early March to meet; the commissioner noted the city may appoint an interim manager soon and the county will take coordination up with that person.
Announcements at the meeting also noted county offices would be closed the following day for the holiday and invited the public to a morning reception next Tuesday honoring Commissioner Vidrickson, who will attend a final meeting next week; the reception was scheduled for Room 107B about 8:15 a.m. before the regular business meeting.
