Policy committee advances minor edits to medication policy, expands menstrual-product access to grade 4

The policy committee for the Niskayuna Central School District on an administrative-policy item discussed proposed edits to Policy 75-13, Administration of Medication, and agreed to forward the revised policy to the full school board for first reading.

Committee members said the substantive edits were limited. A staff presenter noted the committee changed references from “feminine hygiene products” to “menstrual products” to align with updated state language and recommended expanding the grades covered from 6–12 down to grade 4 based on input from elementary nurses: “they do support students as early as grade 4,” the presenter said. The presenter also described the changes as “a couple of minor changes based upon some feedback.”

Committee discussion included a proofreading question about the phrase under subsection B: whether to use “consent” or a different term such as “authorization” or “permission” for a parent request form. A committee member suggested changing the wording for clarity; committee staff agreed to make that edit before the revision goes to the board.

The committee agreed the revised policy is ready to move to the full board at the next regular meeting. No formal roll-call vote was recorded in the transcript; the item will be transmitted to the board as an updated policy for consideration.

Details: the change in product terminology and the recommendation to expand access to grade 4 were described as based on feedback from elementary nurses. The grammatical/terminology change to parental paperwork was raised as a suggested edit and will be implemented administratively prior to board submission.
