Bates Logan renovation: phases 2 and 3 now running together; early summer opening targeted

City staff told the Parks and Recreation Commission Feb. 12 that work at Bates Logan Park is proceeding and that the contractor awarded phase 2 will also perform phase 3, allowing those phases to progress in parallel and potentially accelerate the park’s reopening.
Staff said recent concrete pours have occurred and additional pours are scheduled; colder weather and snow would delay some pours and slow work. The irrigation system is slated for replacement as part of phase 3, with staff aiming to complete irrigation work before the spring soccer season. American Ramp Company is scheduled to install the bike-skills feature in April.
Staff said the contractor-buyout of a subcontractor briefly delayed completion of the basketball court but that work is expected to proceed. The city is targeting a May or early June opening and plans a ribbon-cutting or grand-opening event.
One design change noted for Bates Logan is substitution of bocce-ball courts for an originally proposed pickleball court; staff said the change responded to neighborhood concerns about pickleball noise and that the city does not currently have this type of bocce facility in its parks system.
No new votes were taken; the commission received the status report and asked staff to continue furnishing construction updates at future meetings.
