Board discusses proposed changes to high school course guide; AP course availability cited as enrollment issue

Board members reviewed suggested changes to the Nevada High School course description guide for the 2025–26 school year and questioned why Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. Government and other AP sections appeared to be dropped from the draft.

Board members noted the draft included adoption of European history courses while some AP-level U.S. offerings were omitted. The board was told the draft reflected low enrollment in the AP sections; a district administrator, referenced in meeting notes as Dr. Einsweiler, prepared the suggested changes but was absent due to travel and will present the item as an action item at the next meeting.

A district representative said AP sections have not attracted sufficient student enrollment to justify running the AP versions; the district will continue to provide required classes such as government in non-AP formats so students still receive required coursework. Board members asked whether alternative options (such as DMACC or online offerings) might be available; the district representative said such alternatives would not necessarily be AP-designated but could provide access to the content.

Several board members expressed concern about removing American-history-focused AP sections in favor of European history offerings and asked for more detail. The board deferred the item to the next meeting when Dr. Einsweiler can answer questions and provide enrollment data.

No formal action was taken at the Dec. 16 meeting; the course guide will return as an action item at the next board meeting.
